Tips on Improving Your Mental Health

Updated: May 3, 2018

Having a good mental health is the key to start accomplishing great things. If you’re not feeling yourself or if you’re going through a rough phase, it will be hard to focus on your goals and to push yourself to another level. Being healthy mentally means balancing every aspect of your life such as your social, professional and personal life. Here are simple ways to improve your mental health and boost your inner energy.

1. Think Positive

You might think (sarcastically) to yourself “Well, that’s easy to do!” but actually, it isn’t so hard to do once you get used to it (to get used to it, you need to start though). Whenever something bad happens, try to focus on the bright side of it instead of wasting all your energy telling yourself “Why me?” We’re not lucky all the time and that’s just how life is. So, we can’t just give up every time an obstacle comes our way. Instead, see those kinds of situations as an opportunity to grow.

2. Get in Shape

Exercising helps us reduce stress and feel happier. We also feel so much better when we are comfortable in our own skins. I personally try to exercise as much as I can. I go to the gym, play basketball outside and I also enjoy hiking. There are so many things you can do that are fun to stay active. Try things you’ve never done before. Sign up for that yoga class you’ve been thinking about, or take your dusty bicycle out of your garage and go for a ride. To enjoy yourself, you need to take care of yourself and it all starts with being confident with your body.

3. Eat Well

Getting in shape and eating well are obviously related. It’s hard to have the body you exercise but keep eating unhealthy food. Eating healthy will not only help you lose weight but it will help you feel more energetic. Furthermore, drinking water also has lots of benefits as you’ve probably heard a million times before so I’m just going to be one of those and keep reminding you.

4. Get Some Good Sleep

Sleeping well will help you focus and be able to give your all at whatever you’re doing. It’s so important to sleep so that your body can regain the energy to face the next day’s obstacles. When we’re tired, that’s when we start giving up on the things we were focusing on. For example, if I’ve been going to the gym for a month and then, I stayed up all night because I didn’t want to miss season finale of Walking Dead, I’ll be too tired the next day and that will be an easy excuse for me to break my “going to the gym” habit. Stay focused and go to bed early!

5. Boost Your Confidence

It isn’t a shame to compliment yourself once in a while. Avoid negative self-talk. Look at yourself in the mirror and shout to yourself everything you like about yourself. You’ll see how much of difference in your self-confidence it’ll make. For example, tell yourself you have pretty eyes or tell yourself you have a nice bum (haha that will definitely give you a boost). On top of that, make a list of your greatest accomplishments and be proud of yourself. I’m sure you’ve accomplished great things like graduating from college, winning some sort of award or a sports competition, getting a new job, etc. Make sure you know what you’re capable of.

6. Get Professional Help

There is absolutely nothing bad with consulting a therapist. If you think people will judge you because you are consulting someone, those people don’t really care about you and need to be banned from your life. Talking to someone whether it’s a friend, a family member or a professional will help you feel relieved. Your problems or concerns won’t be solved right away, but you’ll at least have someone there to listen to you and maybe guide you into making the right decisions. You’ll see those people will work magic for you. You don’t know what you’re missing out on.

7. Smile More Often

Try it! Just smile. Don’t you feel better? Smiling makes you instantly feel a little more joyful. Do it a couple of times a day and see the difference it will make. Maybe the people around you will notice a shining person in you.

8. Do What You Love

I know you’re a busy bee but sometimes, it’s good to take a break from life and do something you enjoy. Whether it’s writing (like me), painting or playing soccer, make time for it in your schedule. That way, you can let go of your problems and negative thoughts for a moment and enjoy yourself. After all, our life was made to be lived and not only to pay bills and die.

"Health isn't just about what you eat. It's about what your are thinking and feeling too."
